Love Song Of The Month – “Need U” by Usher

This track is featured on Usher's 2016 album release, "Hard II Love."I personally consider it the best song on the album. That being said, it's the ultimate in "begging" songs and I want to discuss why I chose it and how I believe it applies to how a lot of men would react when they mess up with a woman they care about.

First, I want to say, that at some point we all mess up. You will know a relationship is truly strong when it overcomes adversity. So I chose this song because it’s about humility in the face of a mistake. Regardless of the outcome. “Need U” By Usher is a love ballad of epic proportions. And is my personal favorite song on his, “Hard II Love,” album.

The first verse hits you right in the face. No holding back…

I fucked up
I’m man enough to admit it
But I don’t know if that makes a difference
And I know that
If you just give me a chance to explain
I think… I would just…
I need you

The verse goes more into the way she made Usher feel and how he’s going crazy without her. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there. We mess up, she leaves and all of a sudden the amnesia we once had dissipates like rain on soaked sidewalks during a hot and scorching summer day. Then we begin to reminisce old tales of emotional rapture. It’s always comical to me, because the cycle is always the same no matter who it is.

Then the insecurity starts. After we’ve run the other person off like a wild coyote that was searching for dinner… we back pedal. We become… remorseful.  But it’s a love/hate situation because while we’re trying to win the other person back, we also start realizing that they could have someone else in their life. That level of emotional pain is excruciating. Especially when you feel like she’s being spiteful. Take my word for it… it cuts like a razor blade when our mind takes over. You’ll see an otherwise rational man go over the edge with thoughts of another man being with his woman. And it hurts so deeply because deep down we know… it’s all our fault.

[ Verse 1: Usher ]
How you make it feel
Way you make me feel
Says it feels so good
I like it, I like it, baby
Girl, what you doing to me
Girl, what you do to me
Don’t give them my love
You ain’t even like that
What kind of point you trying to prove?
And you hate to admit it
But you’d still take me back
All that shit you was talking
It don’t hold no weight ’cause

The Chorus is telling. Here you can see that she’s clearly told him before that he needs to change his ways and he hasn’t complied. As men, we can sometimes be, “bull-headed.” We’ve been doing the same thing for so many years that it becomes our reality. Then this woman comes along and wants to help us evolve. Who told her she could do that? We want to stay neanderthals darn-it!

This is a man in reflection. Usher at that point where he’s remorseful for not changing now that he sees she was serious about how his issues affected their relationship. A man who’s willing to own his mistakes and not make excuses or point the finger is a man that you should at the very least, listen too.  And this man? Is begging! All bets are off on this one.

[ Chorus: Usher ]
You always say I’m stuck in my ways (I had it coming)
You always say that I’ll never change (in time, I’ll show you)
Ain’t always wrong, I’ll take the blame (that counts for something)
Man up and say, I’ll own my mistakes (gotta count for something)
Girl, I need you now
Oh baby, I need you, oh baby, I need you
Help me out
Don’t let me down

In the second verse, he’s 100% into the desperation phase but still not quite owning his role here. And honestly, when you love someone, you go there…eventually. Once you’ve thought it through and self-assessed, you do your best to save what you’ve lost. But she’s slipping away, doing whatever she can (even things outside her character) to forget you… to move on from you.

[ Verse 2: Usher ]
Girl, what I do to you
Girl, what I do to you
Do to make it this cold
Trying to get me where it hit home
You ain’t even like that, I know
You ain’t mean it, I know, yeah
New friends, you got new friends
He already know who he’s hitting
Bet I answer when the real one calling
You know who it is when you see me calling
Yeah, I know I was wrong, but you know better
Give you up, I would never

[ Chorus: Usher ]
You always say I’m stuck in my ways (I had it coming)
You always say that I’ll never change (in time, I’ll show you)
Ain’t always wrong, I’ll take the blame (that counts for something)
Man up and say, I’ll own my mistakes (gotta count for something)
Girl, I need you now
Oh baby, I need you, oh baby, I need you
Help me out
Don’t let me down

The Bridge is where Usher finally asks for forgiveness and admits she was right all along.  Why does it always take such extremities for us to realize that the other person is right? Why can’t we humble ourselves enough to realize it before the sh-t hits the fan? Even he knew that it might just be too late. And in this case, it may just be.

[ Bridge: Usher ]
Haven’t always done you right and I know it
Girl, I hope it ain’t too late for me to show it
Don’t say goodbye
Forgive me for what I put you through
Let me love you better
All this time, you were right

Drop Your Pride, Or Lose Your Bride

Sometimes, we have to learn to value people over pride. People over ego. And in this case, it was both. Pride and ego. Usher’s, “Need U,” song hits home because I’ve been there. I’ve been this guy. And I urge any man (even women) that when you have the chance to correct your behavior, DO IT! If you love someone… if you really love them, do whatever you have to do to make them happy. Reasonably speaking of course. In some cases, unreasonable. You don’t want to be that guy begging on a ballad…

Cause… I’ll blog about you.
